Sjöstads chapel

New development and interior / completed 2002
Stockholm / for the parish of Sofia

The small chapel in Hammarby Sjöstad conveys the image of an open and modern church. A refuge from the city’s crowded streets, the chapel with its simple geometry and exterior composed entirely of glass offers a restful contrast to the surrounding apartment blocks. The heart of building, the chapel itself, is placed high up and provided with skylights, so that it is illuminated pleasantly from above. The screens on the inside of the façade make it possible to open and close off rooms and were produced in collaboration with the Swedish National Public Art Council and the artist Veronica Nygren. The slate clock tower stands next to the chapel.
